Generational Best – Final Note for ‘Sweet Pea’

July 15, 2019 bret.dougherty

Tough to see a generational best leave…

Do yourself a favor, put on some D’Angelo and watch a Pernell ‘Sweetpea’ Whitaker video. ‘Sweet Pea’ was a defensive master who moved like smoke from a rich Macanudo and danced like Gregory Hines.

Our generation places Tyson on the pedestal…Please, Zzzzzz. You’re a bore and a ‘lug-head.’

‘Sweetpea’ was art with attitude, class, and the accomplishments to back it up. Robbed of defeats (Jose Luis Ramirez and arguably, Julio Cesar Chavez) and respect? Yes. Demons out of the ring? Yes. But, he had the heart, game, perseverance, loyalty, and humility many fighters or athletes could ever hope to achieve; ’84 Gold Medalist, 4 Weight World Champion, ‘Pound for Pound’ the best of the 90s.

My heart goes out to Norfolk and Virginia Beach. ‘Sweet Pea’ – Thanks for letting us watch you move.
