Back On

Whoa…What a shutdown.

Computer problems held me back this week.  Man, what an overload without being online!  With an overloading C drive and Spring Break shutting down the fat pipes on campus, I had no options.  I have never twitched so bad throughout a weekend.

And yes, I am an online junkie…

Well, we’re back on tonight.  WXYC SportsRap starts at 9.  Check-in tonight here, or tune into to WXYC under the ‘Eclectic’ section of iTunes Radio in order to  listen to NCAA bracket talk with myself and DTH Sports Columnist, Gregg Found.

We’ll have the recorded show posted tonight straight out of the Hill with plenty of unfiltered scoop.

Be sure to follow-up here this week.  The picks are coming in order to help out those office pools, and I’ll also post updates for Fantasy Baseball Drafts this week.  We’re going deep this year.

AAight, get your fresh words here…

Green Machine

‘Nuff said…

Special shout to Jim Hawkins who grabbed this shot. This pic seems to have encountered every Tar Heel inbox this weekend.

From this blogga’s POV, Green’s ‘SuperMan’ dunk ranks above David Noel’s yammy from two years ago. Greg Paulus, Eli, Peyton, and the dude with the chrome dome in the front row got a full view.

On to Charlotte,

Tough Night to Play

March 8th, 2008 · No Comments

After the Eve Carson tragedy, tonight’s UNC-Duke game is a tough one to get up for…

After watching ESPN Gameday, I wondered if tonight’s game should have been postponed to Monday night.  I also thought about how both Coach Smith and Coach Knight regretted their decision to play the National Championship after the Reagan assassination attempt, and even how Pete Rozelle regretted his choice to play NFL games after the Kennedy assassination.

This is a local tragedy, but the pain and shock is tough on a lot of minds.   However, I can understand how sports can relieve pain from a lot of hearts.  From that thought, the good thing is that the game will take thoughts away for a bit.

On the game front, the Heels need to get Tywon into the mix early.  He has two games under his belt, and he should be getting close to at least 80%, but how is the wind…?

This blogga still believes that the Heels are ten points stronger than Duke with Lawson running the show.  However, what I was most dismayed at during the first game was not how we defended their outside shooting, but how often we struggled to get the ball over halfcourt and against pressure ‘D.’  What happens if Tywon is not at full speed?

On the team front, I am extremely impressed with how the Heels have responded to deficits over the last two games.  After both the BC and Florida State victories, I like the Heels’ chances, and I truly feel that with Tywon, the Heels should not only be a favorite, but also are a far stronger team at the moment.

Yet, with this tragedy, I really don’t know how these guys are going to respond.  There is not one person on Franklin Street who isn’t talking about this tragedy.  The few people that I’ve spoken with about the emerging story are disgusted with the pics, and over the past few days, the interactions on Facebook have dwindled to a halt.  Yet, that also could be due to Spring Break.  How will this tragedy affect a team that has several members who were friends with Eve Carson.

I do not want to jump to conclusions.  However, from my point of view, after viewing the photo of an absolute thug using her card at an ATM, I’m enraged, disgusted, and worried at not only how Chapel Hill will be viewed, but also the now changes and fears that will be affect the town over the next months and years.

From a personal standpoint and after observing numerous incidences over the years, I’ve been tired of all of the thugs from Greensboro, Durham, Roxboro, and Burlington coming into town at night and the town not having the police power to push them out of locales where a rough element certainly does not belong.

My fear is that we’re finally going to learn the lesson from a brutal murder that the absolute low-life thuggery that has emerged on Franklin Street over the past decade needs to leave town.

Perhaps the game is a good thing to take minds away from this case.

Let’s do this…

Peace,
BD

“Be True” in the Hill

March 4th, 2008 · No Comments

Here’s a news flash for you…

If you’re in the ‘riser’ student section for tonight’s UNC vs. Florida State game, get in there early. Nike has a special treat for our Senior Night tonight.

In order to celebrate the re-release of the Dunk line and the ‘Be True’ campaign, Nike will be giving out highly limited and exclusive Dunks and other Nike give-aways tonight to commemorate our students tonight.

Enjoy the shoes, they’re smooth. (Finally, a give-away with major taste and class.) If you grab a pair, these shoes could be an ultimate test for establishing your Carolina ‘cool’ in years to come. Rock these in the Pit or uptown, and seen the necks creen…

On the court front, what a way to commemorate one of Carolina’s favorite ballers, Quentin ‘Q’ Thomas. “Q” has done a lot of growing since I caught him in Kaiser Arena in March of 2004. Here’s a great article and some work that ‘Q’ penned for the N&O.

Big ups to the Point Guard from Oakland Tech.

P.S. I snapped this photo of him after Oakland Tech’s City Championship victory in Oakland.  Man, this kid has come a long way.

Quentin Thomas,

Vael Project Interview

March 4th, 2008 · No Comments

Last week we had a few uncovered a few tips on The Vael Project. So, we dug a little deeper for you…

Last Friday, I got on the hardline, and interviewed Vael Project founder and designer, Coleman Horn. Check out the interview here.

We touched upon the new designs of the Vael Project, the peaks and valleys of entrepreneurship, and what he does to overcome risk in developing a new venture.

For those of you who are looking for inspiration upon starting up your own gig, take a listen. Coleman did a great job with launching Medium Footwear, and with the reviews that he is receiving so far in the footwear world, this blogga is putting his chips down with The Vael Project.

Enjoy the listen…And get to the simple task of getting things done.

Story Gets Bigger

February 28th, 2008 · No Comments

Everyone gets their shining moment…

Which is why I chuckle at this story shown on Henry Abbot’s True Hoop today about the mutual fund executive who beat Michael Jordan in a game of one-on-one at Mike’s famed “Flight School”/A-Level Executive Retreat.

Everyone has their story how they got Mike.

Here in the Hill…You’ll never top the legend of the DKE frat boy who hooped on Mike 5-4 with a game-winner from the brick wall. Unfortunately, those chuckleheads paved over the guy’s immortalized footprints that he had cemented to immortalize the victory.

Personally, the story that I want to ask Mike is the duel that he had with Willie Glass in Woolen Gym. Old-school Northsiders still tell of the story that Willie came to Chapel Hill and battled MJ on Court 1. “You chuckleheads still don’t know about Willie…”

Here’s a good video that was posted last week…Check out the dorm room clip. That CBS Sports flag is still the hype…

Hidden Vael

February 26th, 2008 · No Comments

Look what goodies have been uncovered…

And this is some confidential product…So, keep this on the low.

Yet, what am I saying? Already the hype is out on this line of shoes, Vael Project, from my man, Coleman Horn, of Santa Barbara. As the one of the founders of Medium shoes, the guy brings a lot of new looks and twists, and I have to admit that he has me shaking my head because I’m digging this take on the classic Sperry Docksider.

Here’s a solid review from Honeyee writer, Jeff Staple, from Staple Design. On my end, I’m on the lookout for the Borgs. I was always a Diadora man, but I have to give credit to anyone who pays homage to the ruler of ’70s athletic fashion. So, I’m very impressed with the dark-brown Borgs…Just be sure to break-out the low footies on that one.

My brother is all over me with a ‘dope’ rating. He is standing steadfast with his call, and you may see one of these pairs ripping it on the newly renovated Horatio Street Playground.

Steady Preppin’,

“Intentional Chocolate”

February 26th, 2008 · No Comments

If you dig deep in your local online periodicals…Oh what gems you will find…

Check out David Ian Miller’s SFGate interview with parapsychology researcher, Dean Radin.  And yes…parapsychology, but not in a Dr. Venkman, Dr. Stantz, or Dr. Spengler type of way that you may have discovered through “Ghostbusters” in ‘84.

Radin, who has held appointments at Princeton, University of Edinburgh and worked on a then-secret government-funded program of psi research at SRI Internation, now declassified and dubbed Stargate, is talking about mind-matter interaction, intentional thinking, and how intuition will be a major part of the field in the study science in the next century.

In the SFGate interview, Radin touches upon Einstein’s notion of “spooky action at a distance”, which suggests that two objects remain connected through time and space without communicating in any conventional way long after initial interaction.

Miller also has Radin explain his experiment with “Intentional Chocolate”, which reminded me of Masuro Emoto’s “Hidden Messages of Water.”  Check out that read, and bring good intentions to your food and water…Believe me, it’s good for you.

For you dissenters out there, Radin also presented his thoughts at the Googleplex in Mountain View. Check out this vid in January of 2008:   As for this blogga, I’m this book is on my hot list.

Stay Spooky,

Keep your eye open…

I was at the Open Eye Cafe last Wednesday afternoon and lo and behold…An interview breaks out. After talking about sports and blogging in the Carrboro/Chapel Hill area, Wayne Sutton from Local Conversations in Raleigh, NC put me on the camera.

Wayne addressed a few questions about the powers of social networking, blogging, and community media within the sports world. Hopefully, I enlightened a few viewers with thoughts on how blogging can contribute alternative views to the mainstream sports world. (Hey, ask Gilbert Arenas , True Hoop, and the crew at Yardbarker)

Hopefully, this video will point you in the right direction with some thoughts upon blogging and sports.

Bret Dougherty blogs sports, talks radio & compares social media vs main stream media covering sports from Wayne Sutton on Vimeo.

Thanks to Wayne for posting this video on Vimeo. Be sure to check out Local Conversations. The ABC affiliate is reaching out to the Raleigh area to get home-grown local news, and I’m impressed that they have reached out to bloggers within the area.

Keep supporting Local Conversations.

Big Ups,

Triumph of the Collectible

February 18th, 2008 · No Comments

It’s always good to see one of your boys shine…

For my boy and fellow co-worker, Gavin Rhodes of Brooklyn, New York, he shined  big-time with his victory in the New York Times Collectible Car of the Year ContestCheck out the NYTimes article by Richard Chang here.

(Photo: NYTimes)

A total of 558 cars were entered in the contest, and Gavin’s Triumph TR3A pulled away from other collectible Triumphs, British road cars, and a collectible Ferrari through an online poll result of 4,500 votes.  Check out the other collectible cars here.
Here is a clip of Richard Chang’s article on Gavin and his TR3A in yesterday’s Times.

“The TR3A, built from 1957 to 1961, was the most elegant of Triumphs, before they became boxy and, later, wedgelike. Mr. Rhodes got his more than 15 years ago for $4,200. It was his second.

His first was a 16th-birthday gift from his father, Jim, a gearhead with his own crazy way of souping up old cars. Past projects included a 1959 Jaguar Mark I sedan that used a Buick V-6, and a 1932 Ford pickup with a Corvette engine. Mr. Rhodes recalls that the first car he drove to high school was a Sunbeam Tiger, a British roadster powered by a factory-installed Ford V-8.

“There was a coolness factor,” Mr. Rhodes said about driving his father’s cars, but his birthday present was, he felt, more of a “loaded present.” “It was a wrecked car,” he explained. “It had like mice in the trunk.”"

Gavin is one of the coolest MFs that I’ve encountered.

He was chief IT guy at eGroups, and he started up his own grassroots marketing and publicity company for hip-hop, alternative, and indy music and pop culture called Audible Treats.  The start-up does great direct e-mail campaigns…Check them out.

Gavin always knew what was up in town, and he made a lot of the hipster poseurs in San Francisco drivel because he just didn’t fake the funk.

Simply stated, the guy has mad flavor, and he knows what’s up.

The cool thing is that he is using the prize money to look for place to store his prize winner. I hope that he grabs a garage near NYC soon. I need a tour of the BK in that thing.

Shine On,

BD
